week14
So I know there was no real deadline for this last post, but I think I am extremely late! I had a wedding to attend in Ottawa this weekend and got home late SUnday, so I apologize for such a late post. WHile last week I pretty much went through what I liked best and how some social softare could be used in the library, I;ll keep this last post short!
Evaluation and Best Practices
Best Practices:
Blogiday
I will be enjoying my second blog holiday this week. Until next week, take care.
Gaming and Virtual WOrlds
Well I had a bit of experience with week 11 since it was my group project. First of all, I created a second life account, Lew Ragu. I explore this virtual world and found several pros and cons. I really enjoyed the graphics and found it to be visually stimulating!
Creepbook and YourSpace! Online Social Networking
Once again, this weeks content raises several advantages and disadvantages of online social networking. The readings point out that online social networks such as facebook and myspace makes contact more available, is 'fun' and often disassociated from school (which is very appealing when sitting in a friday lecture, during summer or for resistant students). They offer people to join groups of their interest, and at that, are limitless and inclusive. Of course with the exposure of personal content comes the threat of predators, harrassment and violation of privacy.
Social Bookmarking and Tag Tag Tagging
From our first class, I signed up for an account with del.icio.us, but was still vague of its definition and uses. For example I thought that because I had a personal account, this information was private. Hammond et al. provided a useful explanation of how, why, and what tagging and social bookmarking is. I enjoyed learning about the difference of tagging as a free-structured approach that uses folksonomy to the controlled vocabulary I learned about in previous semesters.
Wikis!
My Thoughts
I'll admit first thing that the extent of knowledge of wikis lies in the might Wikipedia. Even then, I vaguely knew that anyone in the global community could edit a page. I had imagined a team working the wee night hours in nowhere land doing all the work for us. Farkas reading however clearned up a lot of my misconceptions--or lack thereof--of wikis.
Blog Holiday
I wrote my blog last night all ready to go and I must have accidentally pressed preview instead of submit and then logged off, so I guess I will be using this week instead for a blog holiday!
