Week 11: Gaming and Virtual Worlds

Van Eck says that studies still have to be conducted as to the effectiveness of gaming for learning. Educators, librarians, and game developers will be more willing to spend resources on DGBL if there is strong concrete evidence that gaming is a strong learning medium. Even so, there is increasing attention being paid to gaming and virtual worlds in educational institutions and libraries. The readings were supportive of game-based learning.

Week 10: Online Social Networks

I believe the topic for this week is the one I am most familiar with. I joined my first online social network in early high school because ‘all the kids were doing it’ so I can identify with some of the readings concerning teenagers and online identity. Representation of identity online is important in online networking. Since my foray into it in high school, social networking has become extremely popular not only among teenagers, but among other age groups as well.

Wikid

Wikis: wicked or wicked?    Upon learning about wikis this week, I find that it is a great tool, but I have some reservations as well. I am still weighing the pros and cons. Wikis can be compared to blogs in that anyone can create a page and publish.
