This is the end, my friends...
Hmm, so much to think about when talking about my personal
experiences with social software, where do I start? Let’s start by saying that
I am old and am a creature of habit – not to say that I would never consider
using all of these technologies to some degree, but I am so used to doing
things online in one way that I don’t know when I would find the time to get
into new habits. For instance, I am sure RSS is a good thing and can really
synthesize my online surfing, but I like going to each website separately
Best Practices
My suggestions for best practices when using Social Software
and Web 2.0 applications in a library setting:
Don’t just do
something because it is “hip” or “cool” to be doing it!
Evaluating Social Software for libraries
Wow, what a whirlwind of social software technology we have
looked at in the past 14 weeks. While all of these technologies have some use
in a library setting, some are more conducive to the library environment than
others. I really like the ideas we looked at with media sharing, as I think
this is a medium where libraries can really show how far they have come and use
media sharing as a great marketing tool to show your library to the world. This
also seems like an easily implemented medium, as most (if not all) libraries
Baby, you can be a star with YouTube & Flickr!!!
Who knew how much fun and easy it could be to use sites such as YouTube and Flickr, 'cuz I sure didn't?!?!
Blog-iday
Yes, I'm going to sit this week out. Have fun in your other worlds.
Online Social Networking = Good Times for All
So much to discuss when talking about social networking
sites – where to start?
Th-th-th-that's all, folks-onomies!
First off, I found the that the
readings this week filled my head with all sorts of different thoughts on what
folksonomies are and their usefulness, and some big words were thrown in for
good measure (Kroski talks about ‘ontology’ and I nearly fell out of my chair).
So, after reading the articles and looking elsewhere for some definitions, I
have come up with my own definition for what ‘folksonomy’ means (with thanks to
Kroski and Funk and Wagnalls):
So del.icio.us!
OK, so I have been tagging the odd article on del.icio.us
for this class as I have come across articles or websites that would be of
interest to the class. However, until I read the articles for this week, I
really didn’t know that the tagging we were doing to these links were actually
being used to help other users of del.icio.us search for things, too. So, by my
estimation, I am practicing the spirit of librarianship even when I’m sleeping!
I am so helpful.
No bloggin' this week
Regretfully, I am going to have to pass this week. Junior Raso picked a geat time to have his first 'I will not go to bed' night.
Back to the blog next week.
