The Realized Potential of RSS Feeds

Before doing the readings this week, I was unaware of the potential of RSS feeds. From subscribing to Podcasts to subscribing to a wide variety of special interests, RSS feeds seem to be endless. I subscribed to Google Reader because I believe it will be very useful for me in my co-op position. As an information specialist, I am responsible for staying current with news related to specific companies and prominent figures in the corporate world. Through the aid of Google Reader, I can now set up an RSS feed that will provide me with the information I need in a quick and convenient manner. This will also improve the production of my entire library team, because I will be able to show my colleagues how to subscribe to the same RSS feed. As librarians, we will all become more efficient with our work.

In addition, I believe that it is important for libraries to stay up-to-date with social software, such as RSS feeds, because it provides a method for people to simplify gathering information, while promoting the library as an effective information source.

To finish my blog for this week, I wanted to ask the class if they have had any similar experiences with RSS Feeds, in the sense that they have simplified your work?

I've not really used feeds to often, and I really am impressed after reading the articles and looking at the cases. I never viewed RSS as being a such flexible medium. I think I'll experiment further with them! :)

Hi Jennifer,

I have actually been using RSS to keep up with issues relating to my work. I wouldn't say it has necessarily simplified my work, but rather it helps me to stay aware of current issues in my area of interest.

Great question, Jennifer. I'd say RSS has simplified many aspects of my work -- from helping me stay current on what's going on with technology (which is a key part of my job), to helping me as a researcher/writer/presenter. If it wasn't for the feeds I read and alerts I subscribe to via RSS, I'd guess that I be spending at least 3 times longer getting done what I need to!
