Hi everyone,

I just finished up my second term of co-op in Toronto and I'm continuing in my position on contract until the end of the summer. I'm working in a special library in a non-profit organization - taking this course couldn't have come at a better time as we are in the (very) early stages of experimenting with a wiki for use in my department at work!

I have had a bit of experience with some types of social software (RSS, blogs, Second Life), but not so much with others (wikis, social bookmarking, tagging), so I'm really looking forward to learning more. I'm hoping that I'll develop a sense of where, when and how to use these tools effectively, no matter what type of library or organization I work in.

Looking forward to interacting with everyone this term!

Welcome to the course, Aysha! Glad to hear it's coming at a good time for you. Hopefully we'll provide plenty of fodder you can use at your workplace :)

Hello Aysha

- Its interesting to have someone here who has used second life before. – while I’ve seen news articles and even some footage on TV I never saw the “point” of a massive on-line experience where there is no specific goal. That being said I did frequent a MUD for a few years – but it was a small community of a only about a hundred users.
- It will be interesting to hear your opinion regarding other social software.

Regards
Greg

Hi Greg,

I used Second Life very briefly a few months back, as I wanted to see what all the fuss was about! I had heard about libraries having a Second Life presence and wanted to see how it worked. Unfortunately as soon as I tried to "fly" (yes, you can fly!), my poor laptop crashed! It was neat to wander around and chat with people, but I was never able to discover what more there is to do.

Hopefully I'll be able to learn more about it in this course though. I'm really curious about what libraries are doing in Second Life and how it is working for them.
