Welcome to week 2! This week is all about blogs, with our focus being on the history and origin of blogs, understanding the principles behind blog technology, and evaluating blogging platforms and software. The readings, case studies and activities for the week can be found here.

Here are a couple of questions to consider as you read the articles for this week:

  • Given the native format of the blog (posts displayed reverse-chronologially, permalinks, etc.), what are some of the ways in which libraries might use blogs to serve their users?
  • Imagine you're working at a library that is considering starting a blog and you have been tasked with evaluating various blogging platforms for the project. What features do you think you might look for in a blogging tool for your library's blog?

And, here are a couple of reminders for this week:

  • This week's chat is on Wednesday, May 14, at 8 pm Eastern. We'll meet in this chat room.
  • I'll post the "sign-up sheet" (via a blog post) for the Group Projects on Monday, May 12 at 8 pm (Eastern). You can sign up for a group/topic in the comments of that post. Slots fill up on a first-come first-served basis and each project can have no more than 4 students working on it. So don't forget to stop by and sign up for the project of your choice!

I was wondering what software is used to power this blog?

Hi Amy - this site is powered by Drupal, which is a content management system. The blogging component is just one part of it -- it's a pretty powerful CMS!

Wow - thanks for the amazing list of blogs. I'd been thinking of asking people for suggestions too, as I'm realizing how uninformed I am about what's out there :) I knew there was a lot more than "annoyed librarian" available, but hadn't taken the time to find anything yet - thanks a lot!
