Blogs and their Features

My favourite feature of blogs and blogging is how easy it is to participate. This is especially important when it comes to libraries, because libraries are designed to represent the interests of the surrounding communities, so it only makes sense that the community should have a direct voice through the library's blog. Specific to special libraries, I think that open source software should be used. Every librarian should be free to submit questions; submit tips on how to improve the library; and be able to communicate instantly across distances, which will improve the operations of the library. I am somewhat undecided if public libraries should use open source software, or proprietary software. If anyone could freely submit comments, then inappropriate comments (profanity) may appear, whereas they would not if this were controlled. However, this does bring up the issue of freedom of speech, so I am torn on this issue.

As for the case studies, I was pleased to see a photo blog being used by Georgia State University Library. I thought this was a fun and interactive way to speak to users who may be visual learners. I also enjoyed Madison-Jefferson County Public Library's YA blog. This provides an arena for young adults to discuss their interests though the library as a portal. I think this is important to promote their continuous involvement in the library.

I agree that open source software is the way to go in libraries, but I think it's important to keep in mind that open source softwares does not provide the customer support for when things go wrong that proprietary software does. Although there are forums that deal with issues, they are sometimes difficult to navigate and find the information that you need and there are often still bugs in the software. So, it's important to have someone in the library that's willing to dedicate time for technical support for any open source software that's implemented.

I agree with you Jennifer that one of the best features of blogs is their ease of use. Anyone can be a writer and publisher with this format. Pauline
